Frequently Asked Questions

Can overseas veterinary nurses or technicians work in New Zealand?
In the past it was relatively easy for overseas nurses to find employment in New Zealand, particularly United Kingdom veterinary nurses, whose qualification is highly respected. However in recent years New Zealand has been producing its own veterinary nursing graduates, thus greatly reducing the need for overseas nurses. There may still be the occasional vacancy not filled by New Zealand veterinary nurses but these tend to be quite isolated or have specific requirements.

For other overseas qualifications that may not yet be recognized in New Zealand, it is recommended that you send the relevant information to the chair of the Animal Nursing and Technology Board, richardsonf@cpit.ac.nz or visit the New Zealand Qualification Authority at www.nzqa.govt.nz

If you are seeking to emigrate to New Zealand or come to out on a Working Holiday Visa, please contact the New Zealand Immigration Service on, www.immigration.govt.nz

Is there registration for veterinary nurses in New Zealand?
At present there is no registration for veterinary nurses in New Zealand, but an accreditation scheme is being explored.

I would like to work as a veterinary nurse, how do I get started?
All the details you need are on course providers page of this website. It is recommended that gain some experience with animals (not necessarily in a veterinary clinic) before enrolling.
